Séance meets musical. Comala, Comala, follows Juan Preciado in his quest for vengeance on his long-lost father after a deathbed confession by his mother. An original piece of music and theatre, the show reinvents characters from the seminal twentieth century Latin American novel Pedro Paramo by Juan Rulfo as an immersive theatrical experience. Comala, Comala is an irreverent homage to Mexican culture – a surrealistic journey through the worlds of the living and the dead fueled by music, storytelling, and mezcal.

An idea from Pulpo Arts’ founders Alonso Teruel and Alejandro Bracho, this chamber musical features an eclectic score by composer and lyricist Pablo Chemor rooted in traditional Mexican folklore and influenced by the contemporary musical canon. The book, reimagined for the 21st century by playwright Conchi León, is as a series of vignettes that interact anachronistically and are bound together through common themes of family, loss, patriarchy, and the search for a contemporary Mexican identity.

Comala, Comala had its sold-out world premiere run in Mexico City in November 2023, earning wide acclaim from critics and audiences. The show will make its international debut in August at the 2024 Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
